Three cheers for "Inside the Lines"!

The cast and crew of "Inside the Lines" won a gold medal at the METG's Middle School One Act Festival this past weekend.  Students also received several awards in a variety of categories. Congratulations!

The following students won All Star Awards:

For Acting:
     Will Glovsky
     Kate Riccio
     Bryn Smith

For Costume Design:
     Miranda Maciejowski
     Emily Minster
     Helen Peppler
     Connor Ryan

For Lighting Design:
     Michelle Morency

Michelle Morency also received the HIGHLY COVETED Stage Manager's Award!  The Stage Manager's Award is given to only one school on festival day, and while we firmly believe that quality and pride in our work count for more than medals and rankings, we worked really hard to earn this one because of what it represents.  The stage managers from the host school are asked to present this award to the school that shows the most respectful, positive, and cooperative attitude during our tech day and festival day.  We're so pleased that our students served as such great ambassadors for Miles River, and that Michelle's amazing work was noticed and appreciated.

Local Watercolor Artist Visits HWRHS

Local watercolor artist Karyl Hayes visits Studio Art to discuss her career as a watercolor artist. Mrs. Hayes recently had a show at the Cutler School in Hamilton, MA.  She spoke about her journey as an artist and shared several pivotal pieces that marked significant points in her art making.  She passed around some of her sketchbooks so that students could take an up close look at her process and notes.  At the end the students practiced mixing secondary colors as well as brown and gray using just the primary colors.  Some of the key take aways were:

* learning to see
* using quality materials
* taking risks
* being excited by your subject matter
* making art is a life long journey, not something you learn by taking just one class
